Elenion Κindergarten
Nicosia, Cyprus
In the historic shadow of the existing Elenio building lies the future of early education. This project is a dance between respecting a cherished past and forging a space for tomorrow’s learning. Conceived to stand in harmonious dialogue with the preserved structure, it’s a blend of heritage homage and innovative design.
Laid out to embrace the open fields, the building is a nearly linear creation, forming a vital space that serves the dual function of a schoolyard and a stage to highlight the old building’s grandeur. This is echoed in the green-sloped roofing, which merges the structure with its natural backdrop.
A green corridor, both a pathway and a playground, forms the heart of the site, connecting new and old in a verdant embrace. It is a space for pause, reflection, and connection, surrounded by athletic zones designed for multifaceted use and diverse school events.
Developing vertically, the new facility spans four levels where the underground becomes a foundation for auxiliary services and parking, ensuring the upper spaces remain vast for educational pursuits. The architectural plan ensures that each classroom is a sunlit, interactive canvas, while the transparent façade and varying shades keep the dialogue with the historical edifice continuous.
Every design choice, from the three-story layout to the expansive open grounds, is dedicated to cultivating an environment that is as nurturing as it is educational. The Elenio Kindergarten is poised to be not just a school but a nurturing ground for innovation and communal growth, in harmony with its historic roots.
